Villordsutch reviews Star Trek: Boldly Go #3…
The hit new ongoing STAR TREK series continues as Captain Kirk and the crew of the U.S.S. Endeavour face an enemy unlike any they’ve faced before… but an enemy all-too-familiar to STAR TREK fans!
In issue #2 of Boldly Go The Borg clearly announced their presence in the NuTrek Universe by carving up the USS Concord and taking nearly all the crew including Sulu’s husband and child. The USS Endeavour, with Captain Kirk sat in the big chair, is now in pursuit of this foe from the Delta Quadrant who are now heading direct for Romulus for reasons unknown.

Mike Johnson’s NuTrek in Boldly Go has already set a new level of something pretty exciting within the first two issues and it feels as though he’s been set loose on something; something that has pointed at a certain rule far too many times. There is now a feeling of risk and maturity growing in this new series and it has only just begun.
Opening in this latest issue we discover Romulus has now engaged the Borg and as expected they are not doing well against one Borg Sphere, as it hunts for the “Outlier”. With numerous Romulan Warbirds blown to pieces – floating in orbit – and the Borg now massacring the citizens of Romulus, this ever-growing legion of invaders are set on one goal and that is finding the seeds of one Vulcan’s mistake.
Kirk, who is now pushing ever forwards, with Spock and Uhura joining the crew as advisors, follow the breadcrumbs in an attempt to gather more information on the Borg and to retrieve the Concord’s crew. However, when an Away Team attempts to make a grab on the planet they come to rapidly realise the Borg aren’t a “Stun and be done” alien race, and due to this Kirk suffers a rather valuable loss.
As highlighted above Mike Johnson is really moving in different circles here. Don’t get me wrong, Star Trek: Ongoing had its bright moments, however this new comic books series Boldly Go feels instantly aimed at a more mature Star Trek fan. I’m also loving the fact that Mike hasn’t just plopped the Borg in for the sake of a “bad guy of the week”, but the fact that it’s all linked back to the genesis of NuTrek, this makes it all rather splendid; that and the Borg are totally vicious helps too.
Star Trek: Boldly Go #3 is a really exciting read, and this is boosted with excellent art from Tony Shasteen who delivers some brutal imagery, especially when it comes to the destruction of Romulus. Also praise needs to be given to the cover from George Caltsoudas which is just magnificent.
If you haven’t already (why not!?) started reading Star Trek: Boldly Go then you really need to, but if you are already reading it then I’m sure you’ll agree that this is really rather brilliant.
