In this latest issue of Star Trek: Boldly Go regular Trek scribe Mike Johnson is teaming back up with Ryan Parrott for the writing duties. Previous IDW Star Trek fans will recall that Mike and Ryan were the brains behind the excellent Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and the truly brutal Star Trek: Manifest Destiny. These two titles alone should make you rather excited when you see their surname’s across the cover of Issue #6 of Boldly Go.
With Kirk and Sulu done licking their wounds since the Borg incursion into both Federation and Romulan space, it’s now time for the U.S.S. Endeavour to return to its original mission, which is exploring the big wide cosmos. With Spock and Uhura back overseeing the blooming of New Vulcan and Valas still in Romulan custody, Kirk asks Sulu to take up the position of his First Officer.
After a month in deep space all is going well, until they come across a long theorized white-hole. It’s here things become somewhat skewed as crew members begin to show their true colours, when investigations into this never-before seen stellar phenomenon begin.
The first thing long-time readers of IDW’s Star Trek will notice to this series is Chris Mooneyham’s artwork, for myself I’m adoring it. I’m a huge fan of 2000AD and Chris’s work – with fast pencil lines littered around – make me want to point Chris in the direction of Rebellion to draw a Rogue Trooper story or perhaps a Dredd and Judge Anderson tale. His work could capture the chaos of Mega-City One perfectly.
Here to with the colours from J.D. Mettler, especially when the ship is placed in danger, the artwork is fantastic even down to the shadow on Kirk’s eyes.
Mike and Ryan’s tale is a starting point issue, with a small element of suspense and danger being added to give us – the readers – a bit of meat to chew upon, but in-truth this issue seems to be to introduce new characters and also something else rather interesting that is not being said; in regards to the same new characters too. To go any further would delve into spoilers unfortunately.
Star Trek: Boldly Go #6 is a good comic; not ground-breaking and/or overly action-packed, but it’s good nevertheless.
