Calum Petrie reviews The Red Mother #4…
The ongoing supernatural story in The Red Mother is a good mix of tragedy and suspense. Daisy is still dealing with the trauma of losing her boyfriend, her confidence and her eye. While her life still goes on, her luck starts to change as the new job opportunities arise to help her move past the difficulties; the only constant though is the descending red vision and the mention of the mysterious mother.
This issue comes the closest to actually linking the initial goings on of the first issue back to the main story, and the introduction of the mysterious old pensioner adds a cult style phenomenon. While Daisy is nowhere near mentally stable at the moment, she manages to deal with his current situations very well… up to a point.
The final few panels in the issue really start to drive the reader down an interesting road, where the Red Mother has followers now surrounding our protagonist and leading her back to the scene where her life fully changed. The story really starts to lurch from thriller to horror within these panels, the plight of Daisy is real and we have to wait till our next issue to find out what exactly is going on.
I am loving the art style of this series, with its very dark imagery and realistic art styling to show off the beautiful city landscape that this series takes place within. The pacing of the story can be a tad on the slow side, yet I feel that all the elements of this story are going to end up playing vital roles as we head further down the rabbit hole.
