It’s less than a week removed from the reveal of DC Studios, the relaunched plan for the upcoming DC Universe movie.
In that announcement by DC Studios co-chair James Gunn, we saw five shows and five series unleashed, including a new movie centered around the Man of Steel. Gunn and his co-chair Peter Safran will team up to develop Superman: Legacy, the first film in the newly relaunched DCU.
Described by Safran as “really the start of the DCU” and “not an origin story,” the Superman reboot will feature younger Supes and is currently being written by James Gunn. But in a new story from The Hollywood Reporter, Gunn could also be the project’s director.
In the February 3rd edition of Heat Vision, they confirm that DC Studios is getting a writer’s room consisting of Drew Goddard, Jeremy Slater, Christina Hodson, Crystal Henry, and comics writer Tom King. But they also hint that Gunn is “likely” to direct Superman: Legacy, which comes as a surprise.
For a while, Gunn claimed he wasn’t the first pick to direct Superman, but during his DC Studios presentation, many pointed out the filmmaker’s passion for this film. As we approach the project release date of 2025 and see directors step into their roles (James Mangold is already in talks for Swamp Thing), Gunn could feel like he is the best pick for the actual relaunch of DC movies.
As we look ahead, is James Gunn the best pick? Fans may think his style wouldn’t usually work with the Superman character, but there’s always room to see a filmmaker stretch himself. Or we could see an even more extreme version of Superman than Zack Snyder ever concocted.
We shall see what Gunn and Safran have in store as more news from DC Studios comes forward.
