With Crazy Rich Asians proving a smash hit at the box office this year, Warner Bros. has decided to move ahead with two sequels, adapting author Kevin Kwan’s follow-up books China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems.
However, given that director John M. Chu is set to spend much of 2019 working on his new film, the musical adaptation In the Heights, producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson have revealed to Deadline that production on the sequels won’t begin until 2020.
The two movies will however be shot back-to-back, which will allow Chu to direct both films, as well as avoiding any potential scheduling issues with the cast.
As yet, there’s been no official word on any returnees, although it is expected that Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Gemma Chan, Sonoya Mizuno, Awkwafina, and Michelle Yeoh will all reprise their roles.
