Thomas Roach on whether the new Daredevil logo looks too cartoonish….
The Marvel Netflix series Daredevil has recently shown off its logo just before New York Comic-Con and there has already been a fair amount of criticism towards it. Many have pointed out that it looks too retro and too much like a comic book. In fact the logo is the same as the original Daredevil comics. Whilst there is something iconic about using the classic title font for the new series, it still seems very dated.
Even though it is the original logo many people will be new to the character, and all comic book characters in fact. Some comics are fifty years old and even older, so the original font and the way characters look can be very dated. People want something modern and fresh. It needs to reflect the time we live in and make people forget this is a comic book.
The reason people may be angry with the logo is because it doesn’t really look that serious. The Netflix shows have promised to be darker and grittier so using a logo from the comic books doesn’t really convey seriousness. Imagine if The Dark Knight logo resembled something similar to the Adam West show in the 1960s? People would cringe.
Whilst these Netflix shows are connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has had plenty of comedic moments, fans still want something darker. Daredevil in general does seem to be darker than other characters in particular. Even in the previous movie incarnation, the character was dark and so was the film. Too bad it wasn’t any good.
There is a chance that this is not the final logo of the Netflix series. This has been released to highlight that some of the cast members will be heading to New York ComicCon and using the original logo is somewhat nostalgic. Only time will tell if this logo stays but I assume it will change. Even if people think it is too cartoonish, they need to remember that the source material is a comic book. And never judge a book by its cover. The logo doesn’t have to be an indication of the tone of the series.
Daredevil stars Charlie Cox in the lead role of Matt Murdock/Daredevil and is the first of the Marvel Netflix series. We are also set to get Iron Fist, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones series all leading to a team up series of The Defenders.
