The Flickering Myth Team react…
After a few tasters and a very brief teaser on Sunday, we got our first trailer for the second season of Marvel/Netflix’s Daredevil, which will see the Man Without Fear going toe-to-toe with Frank Castle – aka The Punisher. Not only that, but Elektra has shown her face in Hell’s Kitchen – and it looks like she’ll be the focus of the next trailer released in a couple of weeks.
But before we get to that, let’s find out what the Flickering Myth writing team thought of this trailer.
Amon Warmann: AWESOME. Is it March 18th yet?!
Ray Willmott: ‘I think you’re a half measure’ *chills*
Luke Owen: loved the final line of the trailer when The Punisher tells Daredevil, “you’re one bad day away from being me”. It’s going to be an amazing series because that’s the driving factor – how far is Matt willing to go with being The Man Without Fear? The only negative is that this is the same sort of story we had in season one, with both Matt and Fisk aiming for the same goal but doing it in different manners. Still, this was an awesome trailer. Loved it.
Amon Warmann: Yes and no on that last point. The Punisher gets his own hands dirty while Fisk ruled via controlling people and getting others to do the grunt work for him. Then there’s also the Elektra factor which will no doubt change things up in Season 2…
Luke Owen: I was more getting at: the theme of season one was “making the city a better place”, with Matt protecting as Daredevil and Fisk demolishing and rebuilding. Both are aiming for the same goal, just in different ways. This season appears to be “protecting the city from bad guys”, with Matt using the law and Frank Castle taking the law into his own hands. Both are aiming for the same goal, just in different ways. But, yeah, Elektra should shake things up a bit!
Anghus Houvouras: Holy hell was that amazing. Chills. Goosebumps. Maybe even a half chub. The Marvel TV shows are a superior medium for their characters because we get to the drama and character development that is so often lost in these CGI spectacles. We get to see who these heroes are, what makes them tick, and give these great stories the time they deserve to be told. The Marvel Netflix shows have ruined the movies for me, because I was already bored with the bombast. When you see these heroes done right, when you see how amazing the adaptations to these stories can be when fostered with care, it makes the two hour blockbusters seem pathetic in comparison.
Chris Cooper: I binged Season One in a weekend. This trailer confirms that I’ll be doing the same with Season Two.
Gav Logan: This is gonna be awesome. Bernthal will crush it as Punisher. Looks like it will be more of the same dark and brutal action!
Alice Rush: The trailer was certainly impressive. Really looking forward to seeing the dynamic between Daredevil and Punisher. The parallels between the two should hopefully pull at Matt’s moral compass even more, pushing him to darker places. The whole vibe of it feels more dark and dangerous, though obviously they’re capitalising on this for the trailer and getting people excited. Well it certainly worked on me.
Tai Freligh: Wow, wow, wow!!! This looks amazing. Keeping the same dark tone and further exploring that moral ambiguity from Season One. Fisk and Matt both wanted the same end goal, but had very different methods for getting there. It looks to be the same with Punisher and Daredevil. Punisher is willing to push it as far as it needs to go to get it done while Matt still has a conflict with it. How far do you go before you become like them? Bernthal is killing it in this trailer and tossing Elektra in at the end was intriguing too. They promise the second half of the trailer next week, so I hope it focuses more on what the Elektra/Daredevil dynamic will be. As a trailer for Season Two, it did what it needed to: showed me just enough to be intrigued and confirmed that the show is not shying away from the darkness that made it so special and unique in the comic book show world.
Eric Bay-Andersen: Loved it. Wish there had been more Elektra footage (I still need reassurance that they’re gonna erase the memory of Jennifer Garner’s incarnation) but the Punisher looks incredible. I also noticed what could be the Season Two equivelant of the hallway fight from Season One? Let’s hope!
Tai Freligh: I think it has already been mentioned somewhere by somebody that they do indeed do another extended hallway sequence [Editor’s note: they have, and you can hear about it here].
Helen Murdoch: Brilliant trailer!! I was so impressed with the first season and this one looks even better. Solid action and I think the character development this season is going to be something special
Tai Freligh: Anybody else catch the crossover with Jessica Jones at the end of her season? I wonder if there will be any more crossover between the two shows this second season on either Daredevil or Jessica Jones. I was reminded of it seeing Claire in this trailer.
Kris Wall: Incredible. There’s not much else I can really say. Jon Bernthal looks awesome and the whole trailer gave me chills. That final line to Daredevil too, absolutely superb. Can’t wait anymore!
Villordsutch: I’m probably going to receive some nasty glances here, but from all the stills and this trailer I’m still not sold with Jon Bernthal as The Punisher. He just doesn’t seem to have that certain spark for me and due to this, I’m not overly excited with the return of Season Two. I really enjoyed Season One, but I’ve been spoilt by Jessica Jones in the meantime and this isn’t firing me up.
Chris Cooper: Did you prefer Jessica Jones then? I liked it a lot, especially Tennant, but Daredevil edges it so far.
Rod Bell: I did indeed.
Ricky Church: I’m actually also in the camp that prefers Jessica Jones to Daredevil. I love both shows, but I found Jessica Jones to be a bit better than it for its cast and mixing in superheroics with film noir. It did something new and different that not many superhero films or TV have done.
Luke Owen: I’m with Chris and Team Daredevil. Though I loved both shows.
David Opie: The morality play between Daredevil and the Punisher is exactly the kind of thing the more mature Marvel shows excel at. Jessica Jones set the bar incredibly high, but this could be the best thing Marvel have produced yet.
Kris Wall: I just want the standalone Punisher series, like now! [Editor’s Note: You may get one…]
Ricky Church: I really liked this trailer. It continues the tone set by the first season as something dark and moody, but examining the morality of its characters. While I agree there is a thematic similarity between the methods Daredevil and his adversaries take, I’m hopeful Season Two will find a way to put a new spin on it. Joe Bernthal looks and sounds very good as Frank Castle. I say Frank Castle because it seems, despite him already taking out bad guys, this season will build up to Castle actually becoming The Punisher, hopefully donning the skulled shirt sooner than later. Speaking of costumes, is it just me or does Daredevil’s costume look better here than it did in the Season One finale?
