Like Nicolas Cage and Matthew McConaughey before him, we are entering the Hayden Christensen renaissance. The actor is returning to the galaxy far, far away in Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi and has now joined another upcoming Star Wars series.
The Hollywood Reporter has broken the story that Hayden Christensen has joined Star Wars: Ahsoka, the upcoming Disney+ series based on Ahsoka Tano. He’ll join Rosario Dawson, who brought the title character to life in season two of The Mandalorian.
Christensen will reprise his role of Anakin Skywalker, aka Darth Vader, who trained Ahsoka before turning to the Dark Side. It’s unclear on how Anakin will return, though, as The Mandalorian is set five years after Vader’s death in Return of the Jedi. THR notes that the actor could appear “in the form of flashbacks,” but it feels like a force ghost situation makes more sense.
Either way, Star Wars fans from all over the galaxy are surely delighted to hear that Hayden Christensen will finally be returning to Star Wars. After appearing in 2002’s Star Wars: Attack of the Clones and 2005’s Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, the calls for his return were louder than one would expect and in December 2020, fans went wild over the announcement he’ll be donning the Darth Vader armor once more for the Obi-Wan series starring Ewan McGregor.
Dave Filoni is writing the Ahsoka series and will serve as an executive producer alongside Jon Favreau. As yet there’s no word on a potential premiere date, but with Star Wars: Andor, Star Wars: Kenobi and The Mandalorian season 3 all lined up for 2022, then 2023 would seem a pretty safe bet.
