Dave Filoni and Simon Kinberg want Star Wars: Rebels characters to appear in live-action movies

April 29, 2015 by Gavin Logan

The trailer for Season 2 of the hit animated show Star Wars: Rebels debuted at the recent Star Wars Celebration event in Anaheim, California [watch it here] followed by the season two premiere and the reaction has been very positive. Since it first aired last October Rebels has proved that it isn’t just a show for kids and the compelling and colourful characters have struck a very dynamic chord amongst most Star Wars fans.

SlashFilm caught up with co-creators Simon Kinberg and Dave Filoni at Celebration and both were keen on seeing some Rebels characters pop up in an upcoming live-action Star Wars movie. Filoni – who previously worked on The Clone Wars – admitted that he has already brought the topic up with the live-action movie directors:

“I’ve talked to the creators of the other films going on and, you know, I’ve always made it clear if you want somebody, just let me know. They can jump over there. I don’t care. I’m all for it. Because I think it makes the experience for fans so much stronger. And what a moment it would be to see some of these animated characters up there live on the screen. It would be great for me too…Lucasfilm is so integrated in story from top to bottom in all different forms of media, we already have had our characters cross over into novels. We’re gonna have our crossover into comic books. I would say it’s entirely possible. And I would encourage it.”

Producer Simon Kinberg – who reportedly helped finish off the current draft of Gareth Edwards’ Anthology movie Rogue One – shares Filoni’s beliefs that these characters may one day cross-over with the movies:

“Absolutely there’s been conversation about it…that movies could potentially even enter into our timeline and our moment. It’s a big galaxy.” Kinberg continued, ” I mean, the stories that George [Lucas] told were stories about specific characters in a massive galaxy. And so there are a lot of other characters’ stories that he hasn’t told.”

Not a confirmation by any means but it’s nice to hear that it could be a possibility in the future. So who would you like to see cross over?
