David Benioff and D.B. Weiss to adapt sci-fi novel trilogy The Three-Body Problem for Netflix

September 2, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Netflix has ordered an adaptation of The Three-Body Problem, the international best-selling science fiction trilogy by Chinese author Liu Cixin, from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss as part of their deal with Netflix to produce new original films and TV series.

The series order covers all three books in the trilogy — The Three-Body Problem, The Dark Forest, and Death’s End – and will tell the story of humanity’s first contact with an alien civilization in a story that spans from the 1960s to the far end of the universe and time itself.

The series will be written and executive produced by Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss alongside writer and executive producer Alexander Woo, who served as showrunner on Season 2 of AMC’s The Terror. Cixin will serve as a consulting producer alongside Ken Liu, who wrote the English translation.

Additionally, Rian Johnson (Knives Out, Star Wars: The Last Jedi) and Ram Bergman will also serve as executive producers alongside Rosamund Pike, Robie Uniacke, and Plan B Entertainment.

“Liu Cixin’s trilogy is the most ambitious science-fiction series we’ve read, taking readers on a journey from the 1960s until the end of time, from life on our pale blue dot to the distant fringes of the universe,” Benioff and Weiss said. “We look forward to spending the next years of our lives bringing this to life for audiences around the world.”

“I have the greatest respect for and faith in the creative team adapting ‘The Three-Body Problem’ for television audiences,” said Cixin. “I set out to tell a story that transcends time and the confines of nations, cultures and races; one that compels us to consider the fate of humankind as a whole. It is a great honor as an author to see this unique sci-fi concept travel and gain fandom across the globe and I am excited for new and existing fans all over the world to discover the story on Netflix.”
