David Fincher confirms that Mindhunter won’t return for third season

February 22, 2023 by Gary Collinson

While Netflix has a habit of cancelling shows well before their time, one that particularly stung hard was the news back in 2020 that the streamer had put one of its most acclaimed original series – David Fincher’s Mindhunter – on “indefinite hold” while the filmmaker turned his attention to other projects, including his Netflix film Mank.

Although cast members Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany and Anna Torv were released from their contracts, Netflix teased at the time that Fincher “may revisit Mindhunter again in the future”. However, it’s time to give up hope on season three, as the Se7en and Zodiac director has now confirmed to French newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche that the streamer doesn’t feel another season is a viable financial investment.

“I’m very proud of the first two seasons but it’s a particularly expensive show and, in the eyes of Netflix, we haven’t attracted a large enough audience to justify such an investment,” said Fincher. “I don’t blame them, they took risks to launch the series.”

Mindhunter was based upon the true crime book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit and explored the early days of the FBI’s research into criminal profiling and criminal psychology, with Groff and McCallany’s FBI agents interviewing notorious serial killers such as Ed Kemper, Charles Manson and David Berkowitz.

Although Netflix isn’t keen on more Mindhunter, the streamer is set to release Fincher’s next film The Killer this year; an adaptation of the French graphic novel series and scripted by Se7en’s Andrew Kevin Walker, the film stars Michael Fassbender, Charles Parnell, Arliss Howard, Sophie Carlotte and Tilda Swinton.
