DC Films’ Walter Hamada opens up about the studio’s multiverse plans

December 30, 2020 by EJ Moreno

For long-time fans of DC Comics, the idea of the multiverses and all of their unique stories are familiar. Even fans of the Arrowverse TV shows on The CW are used to DC and its different Earths. But now, it seems like the general public who watches just the movies will finally be introduced to this strange concept.

In a recent interview with The New York Times, President of DC Films Walter Hamada spoke about the future of DC and how he sees the multiverse as their way of connecting all of their individual stories and worlds:

“I don’t think anyone else has ever attempted this,” Hamada said. “But audiences are sophisticated enough to understand it. If we make good movies, they will go with it.”

Hamada’s plan for the upcoming DC Extended Universe films is to set them in a multiverse, where “some characters will continue their adventures on Earth 1, while new incarnations will populate Earth 2.” This means Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman will remain an Earth 1 story, where the upcoming Robert Pattinson-led The Batman will live on Earth 2.

Connecting these stories will truly start in the The Flash movie, says Hamada. In that Flashpoint-inspired film, the DCEU will link with different DC universes and feature two Batmans, with both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton donning the cape and cowl as their respective Dark Knights.

In addition to discussing Warner Bros. and DC Films’ multiverse plans, Hamada has also revealed that the studio plans to release up to six DC movies per year, including some produced specifically for the HBO Max streaming service.
