We have further word on the cast of DC’s upcoming HBO sci-fi series Lanterns, based on the Green Lantern heroes Hal Jordan and John Stewart. According to Deadline, the latest to join the cast is Jasmine Cephas Jones (Blindspotting) in the role of John Stewart’s mother.
Lanterns will follow the legendary Green Lantern Hal Jordan as he reluctantly mentors new recruit John Stewart as the duo embark on an investigation into an Earth-based murder “which leads them to darker mysteries and reckonings.”
Jones will play Bernadette, “Stewart’s resilient mother and forever the family fixer. She is a perceptive, big-picture thinker who demands excellence from herself and her family.” She is also noted to be ‘Young Bernadette’, so it is very likely we’ll soon hear of an older actress to play John’s mother in the modern day as J. Alphonse Nicholson and Sherman Augustus are playing young and old versions of John Stewart Sr. respectively.
Showrunning and executive producing Lanterns is Chris Mundy (True Detective) alongside Damon Lindelof (Lost) and celebrated DC Comics writer Tom King. Currently in production for an eight-episode first season, Lanterns is expected to be a part of DC Studios’ upcoming film universe that will begin this summer with James Gunn’s Superman.
Lanterns features Kyle Chandler (Bloodline) as Hal Jordan, Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) as John Stewart, Garrett Dillahunt (Where The Crawdads Sing) as William Macon, Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire) as Sheriff Kelly, Poorna Jagannathan (Never Have I Ever) as Zoe, Sherman Augustus (Stranger Things) and J. Alphonse Nicholson (P-Valley) as John Senior, Jasmine Cephas Jones (Blindspotting) as Bernadette Stewart and Ulrich Thomsen (The New Pope) as the iconic DC villain and Green Lantern nemesis Sinestro.
