DC’s Legends of Tomorrow season 6 trailer released, Matt Ryan to retire John Constantine and return as new character

July 26, 2021 by Ricky Church

The CW’s DC’s Legends of Tomorrow panel at Comic-Con@Home dropped some big news for the future of the series. First, they released a trailer for the remainder of the sixth season, showcasing more of the crazy adventures the Legends will embark on.

Second, Matt Ryan, who has played the magical and supernatural investigator John Constantine for several years now, will retire the character after completion of the sixth season. He will, however, return in the seventh season as a new character alongside Amy Louise Pemberton, who has been upped to a series regular role as a flesh and blood version of the Legends’ AI Gideon.

Ryan first portrayed Constantine in NBC’s short-lived Constantine series in 2014, which was a darker show as Constantine fought against demons and other paranormal beings while trying to save a young girl. NBC cancelled it only after one season, but Ryan’s performance as Constantine earned a great deal of goodwill from the character’s fans to the point Ryan was not only voicing him in some of the DC animated films, but even saw him reprise Constantine in the Arrowverse’s Arrow in a guest role before becoming a full time Legend in DC’s Legends of Tomorow from the third season on.

Constantine’s arc will be completed in the sixth season and see him exit the show, but Ryan will still remain part of the team as he will return as a new character named Dr. Gwyn Davies, “an eccentric scientist from the early 20th century who might be the team’s only hope next season.”

“As everyone who loves him knows, in the end, John Constantine will walk his path alone,” Ryan said during the panel. “The time has come for John to part ways with the Legends, and for me to part ways with John. I’m really excited to be creating this new role on the show and having some fun with it — discovering how this new character fits in and causes some trouble for the Legends.”

Meanwhile, Amy Louise Pemberton has been upped to a series regular role for season seven as a human version of Gideon. Throughout all of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Pemberton has voiced Gideon, the Waverider’s AI who helps the Legends on their missions and maintains functions of the Waverider. She has appeared in physical form a few times, but this will mark the first time a human Gideon has appeared and will play a more prominent role in the season with Pemberton’s series regular status.
