DC’s Legends of Tomorrow Season 3 Episode 9 Review – ‘Beebo the God of War’

December 8, 2017 by Jessie Robertson

Jessie Robertson reviews the ninth episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow season 3…

I’m always, always so astonished at how much Legends fits into an hour episode, when so much of it borders on the absurd. And yet it seems to work nearly every time out.

If you predicted one episode in the work pool on how long it would take the Legends to undo Martin’s death, or at least attempt to, you win the money! Jax is struggling, heck all of the crew is struggling but when a young Martin Stein gets sucked through time during a Black Friday sale looking for the hottest toy on the market in 1992, a talking doll named Beebo, Jax sees this as his opportunity to try and get him back by writing a letter (thanks Zari) to tell him of his death in the future. It doesn’t work of course (because Victor Garber left the show) but also because he realizes he’s had a full life at that point; a beautiful daughter, a great marriage and career, etc. It’s a tough pill for Jax to swallow and I was a bit surprised he also took a hiatus at the end of this week’s episode.

Ah, yes, let’s not forget Beebo; he goes on to great fame and leads the charge of the Vikings as their God to wrack up victory after victory and claim land after land. Anyone get a slight Return of the Jedi feel here? It’s so ridiculous but again, it works. Beebo charmingly saying “Beebo still hungry” gives the order for the Vikings to destroy and they do. Continuing sub-plot of Agent Sharpe and Sara being drawn together doesn’t bother me either and all the crew dressed as Vikings are absolutely ludicrous, especially Nate and Ray. Mick has a drinking problem that awkwardly rears its ugly head, sort of here as well, but don’t worry, this Leonard Snart is here to help him work through it. I love that Captain Cold is back, for now, in a different incarnation, but we’ll still take him.

Yes, Damien Darhk shows up and supplants Beebo as ruler posing as Odin and there’s just not enough there to be excited about, with witch daughter in tow. Dahrk may have worn out his welcome, honestly. There is a weird scene of “alternate” scenarios Sara tries to work out with how they go about attacking him, which is new for the show. There’s so much going on here (including Ray taking over Beebo’s body and explaining how science and global warming are real to a group of Vikings) that it should be a colossal mess but it’s funny, simple, and bizarre but all in a fun-loving Legends way.

Oh, and Constantine is back.

Rating: 9/10
