As the Deadpool films enter a new era in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans often question how they’ll keep things the same with new filmmakers and a new studio. Rest assured though, Deadpool fans. Director Shawn Levy promises to keep the spirit of Deadpool 1 and Deadpool 2 alive.
While at the Toronto International Film Festival, Levy spoke to Deadline about the upcoming third film and opened up about where they are in production, as well as what the tone & style will be like with this new studio behind them.
Levy tells the outline in the interview, “Well, like the rest of our industry, or at least large swaths of it, we are paused – we were halfway through filming. It was a joy every day, and that chemistry is, I have to say – spoiler alert – as relentlessly awesome as we had all hoped it would be. But we are halfway through filming.”
As for the tone, Levy states they’ll look to keep up the standards set in the Fox era. “Deadpool 1 is, to me, a perfect movie, and so I was not going to mess with the DNA of that franchise. Our movie is raw, audacious, very much R-rated. We went to great lengths to not shoot it on sound stages with digital environments. The internet has proven that by revealing pictures of our shoot. Thank you, internet!
He adds, “But we wanted something that felt grounded [and] real, but you put Hugh Jackman in his most iconic character alongside Ryan Reynolds in his most iconic character…I would say it’s more a descendant of Midnight Run and 48 Hours, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles than it is a descendant of Airplane!.”
Production on the project began in May in London and at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, England. When the SAG-AFTRA strike began, filming was paused. Some of the shoot is also expected to occur in Vancouver, Canada.
