Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld isn’t sure if a Spider-Man crossover will ever happen

March 30, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Since Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, superhero fans have been keen to see how Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool might interact with already established Marvel Cinematic Universe characters, including that of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.

However, in a recent interview with ComicBook, Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld discussed how he doesn’t believe that a Deadpool and Spider-Man team-up could happen as Sony owns the rights to the webslinger and is unsure if the company would allow such a crossover:

“See, now there you go! So, that’s great. But, my immediate reaction is that he’s a Sony property,” he explained. “I know that you don’t, I know that I don’t fully understand what that interaction is. If you told me that Deadpool was going to run through the next ten minutes of a Spider-Man movie… Spider-Man and Deadpool is the biggest pairing. I just don’t understand the Sony/Disney relationship. As I understand it, it’s a movie at a time, right? I always go, ‘what does Disney have?’ Sony is a different animal.”

While Sony and Disney have managed to repair their relationship and extend their deal for two more Tom Holland appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the future of the Merc with a Mouth is currently unclear. Ryan Reynolds has stated that he’s actively working on Deadpool 3 with Marvel Studios, but it isn’t clear whether the character will be integrated with the rest of the MCU, or kept as its own distinct franchise.

Do you think a Deadpool and Spider-Man team-up could happen in the future? Is it something you’d like to see? Let us know in the comments below or tweet us @flickeringmyth…
