Back in May it was revealed that Netflix had snapped up the rights to Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher saga, and now comes word from Variety that the streaming service has tapped Lauren Schmidt Hissrich (The Defenders, Daredevil, Power) to adapt the material as a TV series.
Launching as a series of short stories in the Polish sci-fi magazine Fantastyka in the 1980s, The Witcher now spans eight books, along with various comics, tabletop games and a major video game franchise. The property was also previously developed as a live-action Polish-language TV series.
The Witcher revolves around the character Geralt of Rivia, one of the worlds last remaining witchers – monster hunters who are trained and mutated from birth to slay deadly beasts. Schmidt Hissrich will serve as executive producer and showrunner on the series, which is being executive produced by Sean Daniel and Jason Brown of The Sean Daniel Company.
