Denis Villeneuve’s Dune heading back to Hungary for additional photography

June 18, 2020 by EJ Moreno

Deadline is reporting that Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming film Dune is not done with production just yet as the filmmaker is planning to head back to Hungary to shoot additional material for the adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi epic.

Warner Bros. is still planning for its December 18th date in the U.S, as the studio doesn’t believe the extra shooting will delay the release. The film crew is planning an August return to Budapest, Hungary, the location where the film was shot in 2019.

Dune initially wrapped back in July last year, but shooting additional footage for a film of this scale and scope is relatively common practice. Deadline reports that the new filming is not an indication of anything wrong with the existing material, which they claim is “sizing up to be epic.”

One of the film’s stars, Oscar Isaac, confirmed the news of this additional photography, stating in a video interview that: “We’re going to do some additional shooting in mid-August… they’re saying in Budapest in Hungary. I saw some things cut together, and it just looks amazing. Denis is a real artist, and it will be exciting to see it come together. It’s kind of wild that we’re doing some additional shooting a few months before it’s supposed to come out, but that happened with Star Wars as well.”

A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, “Dune” tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence—a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential—only those who can conquer their fear will survive.

Dune is directed by Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049) and sees Timothee Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name) leading the cast alongside Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible – Fallout), Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), Dave Bautista (Avengers: Infinity War), Stellan Skarsgard (Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again), Charlotte Rampling (Red Sparrow), Zendaya (Spider-Man: Far From Home), Javier Bardem (Loving Pablo), Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Josh Brolin (Avengers: Endgame), Stephen McKinley Henderson (Fences), Sharon Duncan-Brewster (Sex Education), and Chang Chen (The Assassin).
