Variety is reporting that Sony has tapped Oscar-nominated screenwriter Virgil Williams (Mudbound) to pen an adaptation of Dana Canedy’s A Journal for Jordan, which has Denzel Washington producing and circling the director’s chair.
The book tells the true story of Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist Canedy’s love affair with First Sgt. Charles Monroe King, who was serving in Iraq and kept a journal full of life lessons for their newborn son. Unfortunately King was killed by an IED during his deployment in 2006, when his son was just seven months old.
Williams, who received an Academy Award nomination for Mudbound, has also written for TV shows such as Criminal Minds, ER and 24. Meanwhile, should Denzel Washington sign on to helm the project, it would mark his fourth feature after Antwone Fisher, The Great Debaters and 2016’s Fences.
