DeWanda Wise joins Captain Marvel

January 5, 2018 by Ricky Church

Marvel’s first female centric superhero film has gained another cast member. Joining Captain Marvel is DeWanda Wise in an unknown role. Wise also stars in Netflix’s She’s Gotta Have It, a series based on Spike Lee’s 1986 film of the same name.

Captain Marvel is being directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Mississippi Grind) and sees Brie Larson (Kong: Skull Island) taking on the role of Carol Danvers, alongside Jude Law (The Young Pope) as Dr. Walter Lawson/Mar-Vell, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) as an as-yet-unrevealed villain.

The film will take place in the 1990s, using a combination of make-up and technology to make Samuel L. Jackson appear younger as Fury. Mendelsohn has yet to fully confirm he’s in the film, playing coy about what type of villain he could be portraying, but its been rumoured he’s playing a Kree warrior named Yon-Rogg. The alien race the Skrulls have also been rumoured, with a piece of concept art showcasing Carol Danvers fighting Skrull warriors.

Captain Marvel will mark Wise’s first role in a feature film. Netflix recently announced that it has renewed She’s Gotta Have It for a second season, which Wise will return for.

Captain Marvel is set for release on March 6th 2019.
