Robert Kojder on whether the new trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens spoils a key death…
It goes without saying that potential spoilers will be discussed in this article, so if you read my interpretation that may or may not be correct and become upset that a touch of the mystery has been removed, you really only have yourself to blame. At the end of the day this is pure speculation, but there is some damning, tantalizing evidence beginning to pile up, so read on at your own discretion.
With that disclaimer out of the way, a new trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens was revealed last night to coincide with the launch of tickets finally going on sale, and while the whole damn thing is bloody magical, striking a perfect balance between nostalgia and intrigue surrounding the new protagonists, if you slow down the trailer or outright pause it at 1:44 you will notice Rey on her knees spilling a fountain of tears over a dead/dying body that appears to be…
MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW!!!!!!!!
Chewbacca! It could just be the darkened lighting creating an illusion, but the figure definitely seems to appear hairy in nature while also supporting Chewie’s trademark ammo belt. Of course, whoever this wounded character is, they simply could just be fatally injured and not necessarily on the verge of death, but if that’s the case why have Rey crying hysterically and undeniably in distress as if she’s staring at a corpse?
Keep in mind there is a chance that the shadowy figure could be Han Solo, as it was rumored that a leaked version of the script sees the film’s villain, Kylo Ren, murdering him. This would also fall in line with some Internet speculation and hearsay that Disney would like to remove Han Solo from the main plot-line to focus on a younger version of the character in the spin-off films
Whoever this person might be, it would seem that their death would serve a vital purpose to the overall narrative, triggering Rey to maybe go under Jedi training from possibly Luke Skywalker, as a stepping stone for inevitable revenge. Even if death isn’t involved, it appears we’re staring at a very critical and important moment for the direction of the franchise right in front of our eyes, which is honestly surprising because J.J. Abrams is typically all about keeping secrets.
Regardless of what you think of my ramblings, you may want to bring a box of tissues to your screening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And I don’t mean a box for the whole auditorium, but specifically for yourself. Someone beloved from your childhood is probably going to perish, and you may want to accept that reality now and begin undergoing the five stages of grief.
