Disney becomes first studio to gross over $3 billion domestically in a single year

January 4, 2017 by Gary Collinson

2016 was certainly a great year for The Walt Disney Company, with the studio setting a record at the worldwide box office, having pulled in $7.6 billion in total between January 1st and December 31st.

Well, Disney has also set a record on the homefront too, with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story helping push its domestic haul beyond the $3 billion mark for the year – the first time that feat has been achieved by a studio.

Disney has the three highest earners at the domestic box office for 2016 with Finding Dory ($486.3 million), Rogue One ($447 million and counting) and Captain America: Civil War ($408.1 million).

Worldwide, Disney’s takings for 2016 were up 20% over the previous year.
