Disney+ grounds Captain Nemo series Nautilis

August 30, 2023 by EJ Moreno

As previously reported, Disney is entering a cost-cutting phase, which means a few planned series will not see the light of day.

Deadline reports that Nautilus, the UK live-action Captain Nemo series commissioned by the studio about two years ago, will no longer premiere on Disney+. The report does add that Disney+ is “working with the production team to find a new home for Nautilus, with meetings and screenings underway.”

Nautilus would have been a 10-part live-action adventure series about the origin story of Verne’s iconic character, Captain Nemo, and his famous submarine, the Nautilus.

Deadline notes that the retelling would follow Nemo (Shazad Latif), an Indian Prince robbed of his birthright and family, a prisoner of the East India Company, and a man bent on revenge against the forces that have taken everything from him. But once he sets sail with his ragtag crew on board the awe-inspiring Nautilus, he battles with his enemy and discovers a magical underwater world.

This story comes just days after it was announced Disney+ would no longer home the already-completed The Spiderwick Chronicles.

This stems from Disney’s decision back in May to cut costs by using some projects as significant content write-offs. “We are in the process of reviewing the content on our DTC services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation,” Disney CFO Christine McCarthy said at the time. “As a result, we will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms and currently expect to take an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 to $1.8 billion.”

As part of this new model for Disney, Disney Branded Television will be leaning more heavily into Disney-owned IP instead of producing out-of-brand projects such as Nautilus.
