It was only last week that new cast members were being added to the line-up of Disney+’s Beauty and the Beast prequel series, but that’s a long time in the world of The Magic Kingdom because it has now been announced that the studio is no longer moving forward with the small-screen Gaston and LeFou spin-off.
According the Deadline’s sources the decision not to proceed with the series was made for creative reasons, with the scripts and original music not coming together in the direction expected or running behind schedule, which would push the start date back to later in the year, which wasn’t feasible due to scheduling conflicts.
Josh Gad, who was set to reprise his role as LaFou alongside Luke Evans as Gaston, took to Twitter to confirm the news. He did however offer some hope that the potential eight episode series, which he helped to write and develop, would one day escape from the castle.
But… we truly hope we get to make it when our schedules allow. pic.twitter.com/A3UpgRXKCg

The Beauty and the Beast prequel series would have been set years before the Beast and Belle’s epic romance and follow Gaston (Evans) and LeFou (Gad) as they set off with LeFou’s stepsister, Tilly (Brianna Middleton), after a surprising revelation from her past comes to light, sending the unlikely trio off on an unexpected journey filled with romance, comedy, and adventure. While the mysteries of the past are uncovered and the dangers of the present grow, old friends and new enemies reveal that this familiar kingdom harbours many secrets.
