We’ve known for a good while that Walt Disney Pictures has a Mary Poppins sequel in the works, and now the studio has made it official, announcing that Mary Poppins Returns is set for release on Christmas Day 2018.
The film will reunite director Rob Marshall with his Into the Woods star Emily Blunt, who is stepping into the shoes of Julie Andrews in the role of the magical nanny, while Hamilton creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda is set to play a new character, a street lamplighter called Jack.
Mary Poppins Returns has been penned by David Magee (Finding Neverland) and is based upon The Mary Poppins Stories by P.L. Travers. Plot details are being kept under wraps but it has been said that the sequel will take place in Depression-era London some twenty years after the original.
