Disney sets Lin-Manuel Miranda and Alan Menken for live-action The Little Mermaid

August 18, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Deadline is reporting that Disney has tapped Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda and Oscar-winning songwriter and composer Alan Menken to write the songs for a live-action adaptation of the animated classic The Little Mermaid.

The new film will feature a blend of pre-existing songs from the 1989 animated feature (for which Menken won two Oscars for Best Song and Best Score), along with newly-written material. Miranda – who is also set to star in Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns – will also produce with Marc Platt, and is set to supervise the story alongside a screenwriter.

The Little Mermaid joins an ever-expanding slate of live-action adaptations of the Disney back catalogue, including Beauty and the Beast, Dumbo and Tinker Bell, and sequels to Maleficent and The Jungle Book. Much like The Jungle Book, it also has a competing project, with Universal and Working Title also adapting the original Hans Christian Anderson story with Chloe Grace Moretz in the lead role.
