Disney’s Aladdin opens to $207 million worldwide

May 26, 2019 by Amie Cranswick

Following the underwhelming box office returns for Tim Burton’s Dumbo a couple of months ago, Walt Disney Pictures unveiled the second of its three animated remakes for 2019 this weekend, with the Guy Ritchie-directed Aladdin managing to conjure up a $207 million global opening weekend.

Domestically, Aladdin is performing slightly above tracking predictions, with $86.1 million from the Friday to Sunday period and a four-day Memorial Day weekend of around $105 to $110 million expected by close of play on Monday. Internationally, the remake of the 1991 animated classic added a further $121 million, although it didn’t particularly catch fire in China, where it earned $18.7 million across the weekend.

In comparison, Dumbo debuted with a domestic opening weekend of $46 million and $116 million in total worldwide, with the film going on to gross a soft $348.1 million overall by the end of its run.

Given its opening, box office analysts are suggesting that Aladdin will likely go on to earn around $550 million to $600 million, although it will face some competition in the next few weeks with the likes of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, The Secret Life of Pets 2, Men in Black: International and Toy Story 4 all incoming.

A thrilling and vibrant live-action adaptation of Disney’s animated classic, “Aladdin” is the exciting tale of the charming street rat Aladdin, the courageous and self-determined Princess Jasmine and the Genie who may be the key to their future.

Aladdin is directed by Guy Ritchie (King Arthur: Legend of the Sword) and features a cast that includes Mena Massoud (Aladdin), Naomi Scott (Princess Jasmine), Will Smith (Genie), Marwan Kenzari (Jafar), Navid Negahban (The Sultan), Nasim Pedrad (Dalia), Billy Magnussen (Prince Anders), Numan Acar (Hakim), Alan Tudyk (Iago) and Frank Welker (Abu).
