David Leith, director of Deadpool 2, says that Disney’s Deadpool doesn’t need to be R-rated to work.
Now that Deadpool belongs to Disney, many people are wondering if the franchise will retain its R rating. We don’t know anything concrete at this point or when we can expect a new film but does it matter what the age rating is?
Not according to Deadpool 2 director David Leitch. Speaking with Yahoo! Movies during the press tour for Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, the director said: “It’s rated R so that’s not necessarily the [MCU] brand but he doesn’t necessarily need to be R and [Disney] don’t necessarily need to only make PG-13 movies. I think we’ll find a happy ground.”
That’s certainly a diplomatic stance to take, and we will simply have to wait and see what happens. Leitch is right though – Disney and Marvel could make an R-rated movie or they might find to make a more family-friendly version of Deadpool work within the PG-13 confines of the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe.
