During its nine-episode run earlier this year, fans were anticipating the arrival of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange in Marvel’s WandaVision for at least one episode, however, the cameo never came to be.
Now, in an interview with Rolling Stone, Marvel Studios’ president Kevin Feige confirmed that Cumberbatch had signed a deal to appear in the finale but was later written out of the show.
“Some people might say, ‘Oh, it would’ve been so cool to see Dr. Strange,’” Feige said. “But it would have taken away from Wanda, which is what we didn’t want to do. We didn’t want the end of the show to be commoditized to go to the next movie — here’s the white guy, ‘Let me show you how power works.’”
Although the expected cameo didn’t occur during WandaVision‘s run, we do know Doctor Strange and Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch are both set to appear in Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – which is currently scheduled for a March 25th, 2022 release date. The film will also star Benedict Wong as Wong, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mordo and Xochitl Gomez (The Baby-Sitters Club) as America Chavez.
