Over the past twenty years, Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto series has become one of the biggest brands in the world, shifting over 250 million copies to become the fourth biggest video game franchise of all time behind Mario, Pokemon and Tetris.
With the latest instalment, Grand Theft Auto V, recently becoming the most profitable entertainment product in history (earning an astonishing $6 billion in revenue), Screen Daily is reporting that Salon Pictures (McQueen) is set to explore the gaming phenomenon with a documentary entitled The Billion Dollar Game.
Rob Ryan (Breaking Habits) is directing The Billion Dollar Game, which will combine archive material with new interview footage, and presumably explore the series’ meteoric success over the past two decades, along with its many controversies.
Salon’s Annabel Wigoder and Nick Taussig are serving as producers on the project, which is filming now, while Jan Pace and James Atherton of Quickfire Films and Cora Palfrey of Independent are executive producing.
