Donal Logue on why Gotham works without Batman

May 1, 2014 by Gary Collinson

After a flurry of set photos and official casting images during production on the pilot episode, things have fallen pretty silent on Fox’s upcoming Batman prequel series Gotham as of late. However, IGN managed to catch up with Donal Logue (Sons of Anarchy) – who portrays Detective Harvey Bullock – this week, and managed to get a few words from the star about whether a Batman series will work despite the absence of Gotham’s Dark Knight Detective…

“It’s interesting because people will say, ‘What good is Gotham? A Gotham without Batman is stupid!’. What’s fascinating about Gotham is like, what happened in the 20 years before Batman was so effed up that it needed a vigilante to come and save it — and those moral decisions have repercussions. Like, Gordon does stuff that seems to come from a good place, but you can do something and — this kind of goes back to the statecraft argument — say, in Vikings time, if I want to kill my enemy, I have to kill his kids. If I don’t kill sons, they’re coming after me and mine for the rest of our lives. So you’ve got to pull the root out. That’s something that Gordon struggles with, being that brutal. Then later, if some bad shit goes down, you can say, ‘Well, that was your bighearted moment.’ It’s kind of mock politics, so it’ll be interesting to see. I’m super fascinated to see where a lot of these things go. The question is, how did we get there? How did we get to the point where we had to have a Batman?”

Be sure to head on over to IGN for more from Logue as he discusses his character, the role of the GCPD, the death of Bruce Wayne’s parents and the emergence of some iconic faces from Batman’s Rogues Gallery.

Gotham has been created by Bruno Heller (The Mentalist) and sees Ben McKenzie (The O.C.) leading the cast as Detective Jim Gordon alongside Sean Pertwee (Dog Soldiers) as Alfred Pennyworth, Robin Lord Taylor (Another Earth) as Oswald Cobblepot, newcomer Camren Bicondova as Selina Kyle, David Mazouz (Touch) as Bruce Wayne, Cory Michael Smith (Olive Kitteridge) as Edward Nygma, Jada Pinkett Smith (The Matrix) as Fish Mooney, Zabryna Guevara (The Guilt Trip) as Detective Essen, Erin Richards (Being Human) as Barbara Kean, and Drew Powell (Malcolm in the Middle) as Butch Gilzean.
