Phoebe Waller-Bridge is currently filming her role alongside Harrison Ford’s Dr. Jones, but it appears that she will no longer be working with Donald Glover’s Mr. Smith, with the news that the Fleabag actor has departed Amazon Studios Mr. & Mrs. Smith series.
Announced earlier in the year in suitably hilarious fashion via their Instagram Stories, Mr. & Mrs. Smith was going to reunite the Solo stars for a reboot of the of the 2005 Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie blockbuster. However, according to THR Waller-Bridge has left the show having had a different creative vision for the series than her co-star.
Glover, who came up with the idea and will executive produce the series alongside Francesca Sloane as co-creator and showrunner, took the project to Waller-Bridge, the two having formed a friendship on Ron Howard’s Star Wars spin-off. The report claims that the Mr. & Mrs. Smith split was amicable, and that the two remain friends.
The show will begin its search for a new leading lady, and is still intended to hit screens sometime in 2022.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith was directed by Doug Liman and went on to gross somewhere in the region of $500 million worldwide, and having the creators of Atlanta and Fleabag combine on a new incarnation of the married spy format elevated the potential of the series.
