Richard Kelly, the writer and director of Donnie Darko, says that a lot of work has been put into developing a potential follow up to the cult classic.
2001’s Donnie Darko might not have been a blockbuster hit but the complex and mysterious Jake Gyllenhaal movie has garnered a passionate following over the years.
All this time later, Richard Kelly, the writer and director of the movie, is working on a follow-up and he has spoken to Coming Soon about its progress. While Kelly couldn’t get into specifics about that the project would be, he did comment when asked how things were going:
“Well, I’m probably not allowed to say anything more than there has been an enormous amount of work completed. I’m hopeful that we might get to explore that world in a very big and exciting way. But we’ll see what happens. But there has been a lot of work done. A lot of work has been done.”

Whether the film would be a direct sequel, a reboot, or something merely set in the same universe, we do not know. But fans of the original film will be wanting to keep an eye on this project, that’s for sure, especially as Kelly is involved, unlike the 2009 sequel S. Darko.
