Having made $242 million worldwide at the time of writing, a sequel to the big screen adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s It Ends With Us would seem a no-brainer for the studio bean-counters, yet it appears that this will be where it ends following the behind-the-scenes fallout from the film.
Budgeted at just $25 million, It Ends With Us surfed a wave of counter-programming positivity (read our review here) to post unexpected numbers at the summer box-office which could see its total rising to around the $300 million mark.
All signs would point towards a sequel, including the fact that a follow-up novel, It Starts With Us, is already on the shelves, but sources close have told Variety that an alleged and highly-publicised feud between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni has left any potential plans in doubt, saying that “There’s probably no world where these two will work together again.”
Complicating issues further is the fact that director-star Baldoni secured the rights to both of Colleen Hoover’s books under his Wayfarer Studios banner, so would have to be involved creatively on a potential sequel.
It Ends With Us stars Blake Lively as Lily, a woman who sets out to make a new life for herself in Boston, but after falling deeply in love with neurosurgeon Ryle (Baldoni) she begins to notice similarities between her relationship and her parents abusive marriage.
