According to The Hollywood Reporter, Doug Liman has signed on to direct Unearthed, a sci-fi fantasy based upon the upcoming YA novel from Amie Kauffman and Meagan Spooner, which is described as “Tomb Raider meets Indiana Jones in space”.
The project will reunite Liman with screenwriters Jez and John Henry Butterworth (Edge of Tomorrow), and is set in a distant future where Earth has been undone by an environmental disaster. The story follows “a scholar and a scavenger who reluctantly team to venture to the planet of a now-extinct alien race. With the promise of a salve for Earth, the two must work together to explore an ancient alien temple and finds its life-altering secrets. But the deeper they go, the more the two discover they may not be help their own planet but rather hasten its destruction.”
Liman’s next film American Made is set for release in September of this year [watch the trailer here], while he is currently prepping another YA adaptation, Chaos Walking, which will star Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland. Also on his upcoming slate is the Edge of Tomorrow sequel, titled Live Die Repeat and Repeat.
