Mike Mc Grath on what we want to see at E3…
With E3 less than 48 away I decided to poll our writers on what games they are most looking forward to seeing/want to see at this years event. Since I started writing this some of the games we wanted were announced or told were not making an appearance, but we can still hope for some surprises. So here is the 6 games we want to see/see more of at E3 2015.
Shenmue III
I have no idea what this game is about or how to pronounce it (Shen-moo or Shen-muey) so I’ll let Ben Rayner take over.
Shenmue III. Just like Unicorns, Big Foot or the Loch Ness monster. Many have supposedly seen it, more than most are far too excited at the mere whiff of its existence and if all our dreams do come true, you can expect companies to cash in big time with huge amounts of merchandise and probably more varying collectors editions than you can shake a stick at. (Yes, we’re looking at you Ubisoft!)
After plenty of red hearings, hoaxes and silence, this years E3 really could be the one! Thanks to a pretty promising teaser image, showing what looks like Ryo Hazukis jacket and some sliced petals (add a pinch of salt as needed, obviously) which apparently refer to HD releases of the original games.
But why do we all want to see it so badly?
Well forget the fact that it simply oozes with style, amazing characters and a deep story that ended on the most bat-shit crazy cliffhanger possible. Shenmue practically invented sandbox games!
We want Shenmue III and quite simply, you should too!
Silent Hills
This is going to be a big win for Microsoft if the rumours turn out to be true. About two weeks ago the guys at FunHaus got some information from an anonymous source inside Microsoft that Microsoft had bought the rights to the Silent Hill franchise for “billions”. Along with that info we were also told that the game was 80% complete and that it would release in November. Since then Phil Spencer has taken to twitter to quash these rumours and has denied repeatedly that such a deal took place.
But what big firm would reveal what could possibly be the biggest announcement at this years E3. The PT demo was one of the most interesting and atmospheric games I’ve played in a long time. However we will all know by Monday evening whether or not we will be playing Silent Hills on our Xbox One or just replaying PT, crying over what could have been.
Need for Speed
More yearly released franchises could learn from EA. Last year was the first year we didn’t get a Need for Speed since 2002. People say absence makes the heart grow fonder and this is true with Need for Speed. This s the first time since Most Wanted (2005 version not the other…. thing from 2012) dropped that I’m actually excited for a new title.
EA seem to be taking notes from The Crew and taking an online only approach to the genre. Hopefully EA can pull it off a bit better than Ubisoft and make it so you can actually play with friends and play for more than 2 days without server “maintenance”. But the best details we’ve seen is that trailer. It looks like we could be going back to the Underground era of Need for Speed (which is by far the best). That’s all we know so far but knowing EA we’ll get a November release date and we might get to see some gameplay and get a better idea of how this game will look.
The Last of Us 2
The prospect of a sequel to one of the best games of 2013 has me conflicted. On the one hand I want to see more of Joel, Ellie and the world that they inhabit. Then on the other, I feel like this should not turn into Resident Evil where the sequels just get worse until the franchise needs to reinvent itself.
However, if we do get a sequel announcement I’d love to see it take place with Ellie as the main character. It could be set about 15-20 years later. Joel is dead or dies right at the start of the game, Ellie finds out about Joel’s “betrayal” and we go from there. The scenery and tone of The Last of Us was amazing. We went from brutal murder and attempted rape and to that scene with the giraffes within 5 minutes which showed us the amazing lengths that Naughty Dog went to make a brutal world but one that still holds a special kind of peace and beauty. Actually, now that I’ve written all that I want a sequel more than I thought I did. Naughty Dog pls!
Fallout 4
The obligatory Fallout 4 entry finally makes its appearance. I started writing this article about 20 minutes before the teaser site showed up and that trailer dropped. A lot of people had some choice words about the graphics of the trailer but I’d rather see actual in-game stuff rather than the CGI crap that looks nothing like the game (looking at you Witcher 3).
I could go on all day about what we want from this but we know we’ll be seeing gameplay at Bethesda’s conference but what we don’t know is a release date. If previous Fallout games are anything to go by, Bethesda only releases a trailer with gameplay the year the game comes out. So what we want is a November 2015 release. If that happens then I’ll be in my room if anyone needs me.
Star Fox
My knowledge of Star Fox is a bit limited. All I know is there is something about a Barrel Roll, so I’ll let Ben take the wheel on this again.
With the news that Zelda Wii U has been delayed and wont be making an appearance at this years ‘not E3 but pretty much E3 event’, Nintendo need something big to show off. Something to bring the faith back to their fans who are frightened of words like ‘Mobile Gaming’ and ‘Nintendo NX’
That’s why I’m waiting with bated breath for Star Fox Wii U to finally step into the light with a decent trailer and hopefully, although probably being too hopeful, some damn gameplay!
The Star Fox franchise is one of Nintendos biggest yet most criminally underused! I remember spending hours and hours trying to perfect the art of flying in a totally new 3D world on my Super Nintendo. A world full of colour, explosions, hidden pathways and all those amazing things I could barely imagine!
And that’s exactly what this franchise does. With the exception of Star Fox Adventures, a game that hit all the wrong notes and tried to forge a path better left to Link and his pals, Star Fox always raises the bar and simply leaves you in awe. It lets you fly through space, no complications, and constantly save your team mates which happen to consists of a fuddy-duddy old rabbit, sarcastic pain the arse falcon and a weak toad always in need of rescue.
I wouldn’t have it any other way though!
And that’s it. Did I leave out anything that you want or do you think I’m talking out of my ass? Let me know in the comments.
