EA developing an open world Star Wars video game

March 25, 2018 by Gary Collinson

EA hasn’t enjoyed the best of times with its Star Wars video game license as of late. Star Wars Battlefront was criticised for its lack of content, the sequel Star Wars Battlefront II came under heavy fire for its “pay to win” model, and the long-gestating Visceral Games title from Amy Henning (Uncharted) had the plug pulled when EA decided to close the studio down last year.

At the time, it was said that EA would be retooling the Visceral title, described as “a story-based, linear adventure game”, and now a job listing on EA’s website has seemingly revealed that the project is being revived as an open world game.

Said listing is for a Lead Online Engineer for the publisher’s Vancouver studio, who would “lead a team to deliver Online features for a Star Wars Open World project”. Since being reported by GameSpot, the listing now reads “a AAA Star Wars title” with any and all reference to open world removed.

EA has previously revealed that it does not have a Star Wars title ready for release at present, with a decision yet to be made on Battlefront III, and Respawn Entertainment’s game not expected to arrive until the 2020 fiscal year. That led to recent rumours that Lucasfilm was unhappy with the publisher and that EA may potentially lose the Star Wars license, although that would seem unlikely if the company is hiring for this new project.

Are you excited about the prospect of an open world Star Wars game from EA? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
