Though prospects of a sequel to Jack Reacher looked dim, it’s now being reported that Paramount is indeed looking to get Tom Cruise behind the wheel of Reacher’s Chevelle once more, and are looking at The Last Samurai and Blood Diamond director Ed Zwick to make it happen.
According to Deadline, Zwick is currently in negotiations with the studio and Skydance to take the reins of the fledgling franchise. The 2012 film was directed by Christopher McQuarrie, and though everyone wanted him back for the sequel, he’s been busy dangling Cruise off of an airplane for Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.
As previously rumored, the sequel will be based on the Lee Child Jack Reacher novel Never Go Back, which was published in 2013. In it, Reacher heads back to Virginia for a date with a woman who’s now the commanding officer of his old military base. But by the time he gets there, she’s been arrested and Reacher finds himself charged with “pummeling one guy and fathering a child with a woman.” He of course can’t remember either transgression, but uses his usual methods to get to the bottom of the mystery.
Tentatively titled Jack Reacher 2 until the day the studio heads can think of a derivative and forgettable subtitle, the film will be executive produced by McQuarrie, Cruise and Don Granger. Richard Wenk wrote the original draft of the screenplay, which will now be polished by Zwick and The Last Samurai scribe Marshall Herskovitz.
