Well, here’s something that may well dampen some of the enthusiasm for Coming 2 America, as Eddie Murphy has revealed during an interview with CinemaBlend that the upcoming sequel to the 1988 comedy classic will be PG-13, as opposed to the R-rating of the original film.
“I think what happened was, there was a period when Hollywood was on some PG-13… that’s how you reached most audiences, and there was, maybe, a 15-year period where that’s all everybody was doing,” said Murphy, explaining his shift from adult-oriented material to family friendly movies during a promotional interview for the Rudy Ray Moore biopic Dolemite Is My Name. “So I got caught up in that shit. But no, doing Dolemite, we went, ‘This movie has to be rated R because of the way Rudy Ray Moore was.’ But I’m doing Coming to America, and that’s PG-13.”
Coming 2 America reteams Murphy with his Dolemite director Craig Brewer, and features the return of original cast members Arsenio Hall (Semmi), James Earl Jones (King Jaffe Joffer), Paul Bates (Oha) and John Amos (Cleo McDowell) as well as new additions Wesley Snipes (Blade), Rick Ross (Uncle Drew), Jermaine Fowler (Sorry to Bother You), Leslie Jones (Ghostbusters), KiKi Layne (If Beale Street Could Talk), Tracy Morgan (The Last OG) and R&B star Rotimi (Power). It is set for release on December 18th 2020.
