Edgar Ramirez talking to Scott Derrickson for role in Doctor Strange

June 24, 2014 by James Garcia

Though the project has yet to be “officially” confirmed by Marvel Studios, the long-gestating Doctor Strange movie is finally gaining traction, with Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose director Scott Derrickson at the helm.

Over the last few weeks the Sorcerer Supreme has been in the news cycle several times, from gaining Prometheus scribe Jon Spaihts to wrangling a list of prospective actors for the titular role, including Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hardy, and Jared Leto.

Now we have another name to throw into the mix, as IGN reports that Edgar Ramirez (Che, Wrath of the Titans) is talking with Derrickson about a possible role. Ramirez stars in Derrickson’s new horror film, Deliver Us From Evil, and was asked if he had been approached about Doctor Strange. His response?

“We’re talking. We’ve been talking.“

That’s definitely not much to go on, and a far cry from being “in talks” for a role. However, there’s a very good chance that Derrickson liked what he saw from Ramirez in Deliver Us From Evil and has tapped him for a role in his upcoming Marvel film, either as the titular master of sorcery or his nemesis, Baron Mordo. Of course, there’s also the chance that nothing will come of these talks at all, so we’ll just have to sit back and see what happens.

Doctor Strange doesn’t currently have a cast or release date, though we expect more details to arrive at San Diego Comic-Con this July, and for the film to arrive sometime in 2016 after Captain America 3.
