Dexter Morgan isn’t the only Showtime character to get a new series as Variety reports a sequel series to Nurse Jackie is in development with Edie Falco reprising her iconic role for Amazon Prime Studios.
A new Nurse Jackie was rumoured to be in development last year, but this is our first official word of its existence as well as Falco’s involvement. Nurse Jackie ran on Showtime from 2009 – 2015 and the sequel series will pick up a decade after the original series finale. The synopsis reads:
10 years after we left Jackie Peyton (Falco) clinging to life in the series finale, we find her back on her feet in spite of having lost her nursing license. The continuation of her story will find her facing new dilemmas in trying to be good in a world where being bad is often not only easier, but a lot more fun.
The new series is being developed by original Nurse Jackie writers Liz Flahive and Abe Sylvia, both of whom will write and executive produce. Sylvia will also direct while Falco will also executive produce alongside former Showtime president Bob Greenblatt. Lionsgate Television and Amazon MGM will produce and oversee the series.
Nurse Jackie was Falco’s first leading role after starring in The Sopranos and became a hit for Showtime. The series was nominated for several Emmy awards and Golden Globes throughout its run with Falco consistently being nominated for her role as Nurse Jackie and winning in 2010.
