In this era of YouTube trailers and breaking news movie reviews trending on Twitter, it was a miracle that the BBC’s late-night flagship film show had lasted this long, but today it has been announced that the Film… series, made popular by Barry Norman, will not be given a 2019 iteration.
First broadcast in 1971, and fronted by the late, great Barry Norman, the half-hour review show was the gateway for film fans of a certain generation to get their celluloid fix, however the corporation announced today that “In 2019 we will be creating an enhanced offer for lovers of film both on television and online”, one that would be providing “a more consistent approach across the year”. They added that they’re “still working through the details and will have more news about what this will look like soon.”
In 1999 Jonathan Ross took over presenting duties from Norman, before Claudia Winkleman became the last full-time host, occupying the chair until 2016, when it became a revolving door of guest presenters.
