World Cup fever has officially taken over everything and even one of Hollywood’s biggest directors wants a slice of the action. THR is reporting that Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) is currently in preliminary talks to direct a remake of the 1981 football flick which is currently titled Victory.
If you’re not familiar with the original, Escape to Victory centres around a group of WWII PoW’s who use a proposed friendly football match against the German national team as a cover to escape. Sylvester Stallone starred as an American goalkeeper and Michael Caine as the captain supremo with Max Von Sydow portraying a Major in the German army. Famously, the rest of the cast was made up of real life (ex)footballers including Bobby Moore, Ozzie Ardiles, John Wark and Pelé.
Gavin O’Connor (Warrior) is handling script duties and there’s been no hints to when production will kick off, but it’s likely that Liman will take the hot seat after his next movie – Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell – has wrapped.
No word yet on whether Messi or Ronaldo will be making an appearance.
