Eternals 2 is reportedly dead at Marvel Studios

March 14, 2024 by EJ Moreno

If you were hoping for another adventure with the cosmic heroes of Chloe Zhao’s Eternals, sadly, the sequel’s development seems to be over.

According to DanielRPK, Eternals 2 is no longer on the slate. Per the report, Marvel is focusing on fewer risks and more guaranteed hits with its movies. That comes with the plans we already knew the studio would see a slowdown in the number of titles it plans to release.

As one of the biggest releases post-Avengers: Endgame, Marvel Studios was hoping Eternals would be a smash hit. The film served as the follow-up to Zhao’s Oscar-winning moment with Nomadland. Sadly, the film grossed just $402 million worldwide at the box office. It also sits as one of the MCU movies with a Rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes, sitting at a bizarrely low 47%.

While sequel talks were floated and several new story threads were established in the film’s post credits scenes, it seems the interest in these Space Gods didn’t warrant any development. We’ll see if these characters will appear in future MCU projects.

“Marvel Studios’ Eternals features an exciting new team of Super Heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ancient aliens who have been living on Earth in secret for thousands of years. Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, an unexpected tragedy forces them out of the shadows to reunite against mankind’s most ancient enemy, The Deviants.”

Eternals is directed by Chloe Zhao (The Rider) and features a cast that includes Angelina Jolie (Maleficent) as Thena, Richard Madden (Bodyguard) as Ikaris, Don Lee (Train to Busan) as Gilgamesh, Salma Hayek (The Hitman’s Bodyguard) as Ajak, Lauren Ridloff (The Walking Dead) as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry (Child’s Play) as Phastos, Lia McHugh (American Woman) as Sprite, Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick) as Kingo, Kit Harington (Game of Thrones) as Dane Whitman, Gemma Chan (Captain Marvel) as Sersi and Barry Keoghan (Dunkirk) as Druig.
