Golden Globe-wining Dahmer star Evan Peters has inked a deal with Disney to enter the world of Tron.
According to The Hollywood Reporter Peters will saddle up on the grid alongside Jared Leto, who has taken the lead role in Joachim Rønning’s (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil) decade-in-the-making sequel.
Titled Tron: Ares, the third installment in Disney’s futuristic franchise will hope to ignite the box-office in a way that its predecessors didn’t manage to do.
The original Tron was released in 1982 and starred Jeff Bridges as video game designer Kevin Flynn, who was sucked inside his own creation, where he had to team up with the game’s security system in order to defeat malevolent software.
The film only grossed $50 million worldwide, but its cult status meant that almost 30 years later Disney attempted an update patch in the form of a Joseph Kosinski directed sequel, Tron: Legacy. Unfortunately that only made $400 million back from a reported $170 million production budget.
Rumours of a sequel have circulated since Legacy‘s 2010 release, but according to reports Ares won’t feature returning characters, and will instead focus on the emergence of a sentient program that crosses over into the human world that is not ready for contact.
The script has been written by Jesse Wigutow (Eragon) and Jack Thorne (Help), with Leto playing the titular Ares, who has been described as the manifestation of the program. There are no details on who Peters will be cast as, but the report states that the script calls for a soldier in the computer world and an awkward gamer in the human world.
