A new Evil Dead movie is on the way, titled Evil Dead Rise, and director Lee Cronin (The Hole in the Ground) has discussed his goals for the next feature film in the long-running horror series.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Cronin revealed his main goal for Evil Dead Rise is to deliver audiences a “roller coaster of terror” as they were the memories he had of Evil Dead when he first watched them.
“For me, the key thing I kept reminding myself of, when you’re in the trenches and you’re developing something, was to make sure it’s a roller coaster,” Cronin said. “To make sure that it has twists and turns and that it’s visceral and engaging. To sum all that up, to come back to what I just said, I wanted to create a roller coaster of terror. That was really the key for me. My memories of Evil Dead, when I watched them at a young age, always marvelling at ‘how does this even exist?’ It just continues to poke at my brain and refresh every time I watch it. So to boil it down to an even simpler thing was that it’s experiential. It has to be a horror experience. And that’s the key and that’s what I’m trying to achieve with this.”
While we don’t know any details regarding the project, Bruce Campbell, who will serve as a producer, has confirmed the film will leave its familiar setting as there will be “no more cabin in the woods.” However, Evil Dead Rise will not feature Campbell’s Ashley “Ash” J. Williams as the actor has publicly revealed that he has retired from the role following the cancellation of Ash vs. Evil Dead. It is also presumed that it won’t have any ties to Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead either – although that is yet to be confirmed.
