Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey has found its villain. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ewan McGegor (Christopher Robin) has been cast as the villainous mobster Black Mask in the DC superhero film.
Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask, first appeared in the Batman comics in 1985 as a powerful mob figure in Gotham’s underworld. Since then, he has plagued Batman and his network of heroes in various stories, having prominent roles in Batman: War Games and Ed Brubacker’s run on Catwoman. In other media, Black Mask has appeared in the animated film Batman: Under The Red Hood, based on the comic of the same name, and the video game Batman: Arkham Origins, a prequel in the Batman: Arkham series.
McGregor was originally rumoured for the role back in September, with Sharlto Copley (District 9) also said to have been under consideration. McGregor will star alongside Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Rosie Perez in the film.
