Exclusive Interview – House of the Dragon’s Matthew Needham talks Larys Strong’s ruthlessness and mystery

December 12, 2022 by Ricky Church

Ricky Church chats with House of the Dragon star Matthew Needham about his role as Larys Strong…

After the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon launched earlier this year, it gave fans plenty of characters to root for or hate as they each plotted to sit on the Iron Throne. In fact, House of the Dragon blurs the line between good and evil more than Game of Thrones did as both the Greens and the Blacks, two factions in the Targaryen dynasty who claim their right to the throne, have valid reasons for their beliefs and actions – even if certain individuals in both parties fall on the side of morally corrupt. For one character in particular, however, it is quite clear he holds no morals.

Ser Larys Strong is a man who seemingly knows many of the royal court’s secrets, even those of the manipulative Hand of the King Otto Hightower, and is cold and calculating as he is mysterious. Though he only has a few scenes throughout the first season, sharing them with Queen Alicent Hightower, he made quite an impression with his ruthless actions as he arranged for the murder of his father and brother, a very dark act as many in Westeros believe kinslaying to be sacrilegious, and has a particular arrangement with Alicent and her feet.

We talked with Larys’ actor Matthew Needham about Larys’ ruthlessness, his mysterious motivations and what it’s meant to join the Game of Thrones franchise. Watch our interview below…

Based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” the series, which is set 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones,” tells the story of House Targaryen.

House of the Dragon features a cast that includes Paddy Considine (The Outsider), Matt Smith (Doctor Who), Milly Alcock (Upright), Emily Carey (Casualty), Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One), Emma D’Arcy (Truth Seekers), Rhys Ifans (The Amazing Spider-Man), Steve Toussaint (Small Axe), Eve Best (Nurse Jackie), Fabien Frankel (The Serpent), Sonoya Minuzo (Crazy Rich Asians), and Graham McTavish (Outlander).

House of the Dragon: Season 1 will be released on 4K and Blu-ray December 20th.
