With Fast & Furious 7 having just passed $1.15 billion at the worldwide box office, it should come as no shock to anyone that the eighth film in the franchise has been officially announced.
At CinemaCon, which is in full swing across the Pond, actor Vin Diesel confirmed the news, with Fast & Furious 8 set for release on April 14th, 2017.
Furious 7 is the first film in the franchise to pass the magic $1 billion number (a feat it achieved in a record-breaking 17-days) and is Universal Pictures’ first film to ever cross that landmark. So far, Furious 7 has grossed over $300 million in the US, with a further $858 million intenationally.
James Wan directs Furious 7, which features Diesel, the late Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Kurt Russell, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Djimon Hounsou, Tony Jaa, Ronda Rousey, Elsa Pataky, Lucas Black and Jason Statham.
No news as to whether Wan will return to direct the new film, although rumours earlier this month suggested the director may well jump ship to direct Warner Bros. and DC’s Aquaman film, starring Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones).
